Cutting edge technology. "A more humane and equal method of execution. In 1789, French physician Joseph-Ignace Guillotin argued that all condemned people, regardless of social class, should be executed in the same way. Before this, nobles might be beheaded with a sword, while commoners faced far more brutal punishments. The first execution by guillotine took place in 1792. The last took place in 1977. The guillotine was still in use eight years after the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Humans had already walked on the Moon while France was still executing people this way. Ironically, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin opposed the death penalty. Yet his name became forever linked to one of history's most infamous execution devices."
